RFID

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag is a small object that can be attached to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person.

RFID tags are often envisioned as a replacement for barcodes, having a number of important advantages over the older barcode technology. They may not ever completely replace barcodes, due in part to their relatively higher cost. For some lower cost items the ability of each tag to be unique may be considered to be overkill.

Possible Business Uses:

Tracking Goods
High-frequency RFID tags are used in library books or bookstore tracking, pallet tracking, airline baggage tracking, and apparel item tracking.

Building Access Control
High-frequency tags are widely used in identification badges, replacing earlier magnetic stripe cards.

Electronic Cash
Some smart cards embedded with RFID chips are used as electronic cash, such as the new American Express Blue credit card, the London Underground also uses RFID to allow people to pay fares quickly.

Returning Lost Pets
Low-frequency RFID tags are commonly used for animal identification. Pets can be implanted with small chips so that they may be returned to their owners if lost.
