Video on the web is a modern alternative to TV. Any program you see on TV or film you see at the cinema can be compressed and watched online via a website or downloaded to your hard drive for later viewing. There are two main types of delivery for web video.
Streaming video is similar to TV, as it is transmitted, the viewer can receive the programme or film without delay. The video will play in accordance to the connection speed. The faster the connection the better quality the video. This enables the viewer to watch video instantly and even live broadcasts can be shown this way. Once watched the video has to be reloaded in order to watch and it isn't easy to locate different parts of the file. The advantage of streaming video is that it's fast and the file isn't downloaded to the viewers hard drive.
Semi-streaming video works on the principle that it will download a small part of the file into its buffer, then begin playing while the rest of the video is being downloaded in the background. QuickTime enables the video to be tailored to the users connection speed so that it plays as quick as streaming video, but stays on your hard drive for further playback. If required the video file can also be protected from the user copying the content. The advantage of this is that when the file is downloaded, you can watch the video again and locate a particular portion of the video clip.
